Catching ZZZs is important. But what's the key to staying awake during the longest, most boring lecture ever? Take it from someone who has had numerous teachers that sound like the guy from the Clear Eyes commercials; keep your mind engaged! It's proven that if you doodle while you're listening to a long lecture, you will be more likely to stay awake as well as remember what you hear. I'm not saying become Picasso! But take notes of what your teacher is saying and doodle small things on the margins of your paper. If you can text while walking, you can take notes while listening to your teacher and doodle at the same time!
Snacking is also a great way to stay awake. Most teachers won't make a big deal if you are snacking on something like grapes or a nutrition bar. Food feeds your brain and also keeps your mind involved (although I do caution you from eating dry cereal or chips during class.) Believe me, keeping your mind involved and active is not only good for your grades…its much better than your classmates finding you snoring or drooling on your desk in class! Give it a try! You may actually learn a thing or two from your monotone teacher this semester.
